Shake your way into your ideal internship or graduate position

Here at Instant Impact, experts in helping graduates transition into the workplace, we are used holding interviews. With so many candidates for so few positions in this saturated graduate labour market, it is important to make a good impression right from the outset. Here's a few quick tips on how to make a simple handshake increase your chances of employment.

Whether you are applying for internships and graduate positions or interviewing to be a new manager at a firm, everyone knows how crucial the first impression is at interview. Statistics suggest that a whopping 93% of people’s judgments of others are based on non-verbal input like body language.*

So whilst you can wear the right clothes and look the part for a role, there are many more aspects that contribute to the all important first impression. Admittedly there are some things that are almost impossible to control without looking awkward and not being yourself; changing your posture, voice or walk, for example, is extremely difficult. That said, your handshake is something you can make sure you get right:

  1. Shake firmly and confidently: No one likes a wet handshake, show off your confidence without going overboard – you don’t want to break their fingers!
  1. Make eye contact: Not looking into your interviewer’s eyes when you shake their hand shows that you are nervous or simply rude!
  1. Introduce yourself: Although the onus is certainly on the interviewer to introduce themselves and make initial conversation it will only play in your favour if you can positively engage with them before and afterwards.

The handshake is still a crucial part of business and without one that reflects who you are, you’re going to struggle to tie down that client facing internship or graduate position that you’ve been dreaming of!
